Physical Education

PE at Greensted Primary School

At Greensted, Physical Education (PE) plays an important part of the curriculum for all children. PE improves motor skills and increases muscle strength and bone density, which in turn makes children more likely to engage in healthy activity outside of school. Furthermore, it educates children on the positive benefits of exercise and allows them to understand how good it can make them feel.

Intent

Greensted Primary School believes a high-quality Physical Education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities. It provides opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their physical and mental health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities will build their characters and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.

Through our PE curriculum, pupils will develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities and build on their own enjoyment of physical activity. They will develop their control and co-ordination and be encouraged to work independently and as part of a team to develop their skills to work cooperatively and collaboratively with others.

Intention

Pupils at Greensted Primary School participate in weekly, high-quality PE lessons and sporting activities taught by a team of qualified coaches. Our inclusive curriculum incorporates a variety of sports to ensure all children develop the confidence, tolerance and the appreciation of their own and others’ strengths and weaknesses.  We provide outstanding opportunities for all children to engage in extra-curricular activities during and after school, in addition to competitive intra and inter sporting events.

Impact

Our comprehensive curriculum aims to improve the wellbeing and fitness of all children at Greensted Primary School, not only through the teaching of sporting skills, but through the underpinning values and disciplines PE promotes. Within our lessons, children are taught about self-discipline and that to be successful you need to take ownership and responsibility of their own health and fitness. Our impact is therefore to motivate children to utilise these underpinning skills in an independent and effective way in order to live happy and healthy lives.
